Ready...Set...FASHION WEEK!
Its almost that time of year again...
Those fleeting few weeks when the fashionably dressed travel from city to city to take in the spectacle that is Fashion Week. Described quite controversially as the "Fashion Circus" and recently having undergone some major changes in NYC; Fashion Week may prove to be very different this time around.
Lets discuss.

The Round Up: Friday August 9, 2013
Happy Friday guys, I guess today's post is somewhat of a milestone, because it happens to be my 100th post!
When I started my blog I kept it a secret and actually didn't tell a soul (except my hubby) because I was a tad self conscious about my writing, now only 7 months later I am so happy to be sharing my work with readers from all around the world. So thanks guys, seriously, from the bottom of my heart thank you for all your support and love. Especially to my friends and fam who have given me great words of support and encouragement, Laur, Mila and Nicole, Mom & Yus; thanks a million!
Anyways, on to this weeks round up, which I know is why you stopped by today. Since I am on a lil narcissistic kick I figured I would share with you my top 3 monogrammed fashionable items. What better way to say "Damn, I really love me!" than with monogrammed swag? There is no better way, so enjoy and as always have a splendid weekend!
1. Anthropologie has really nailed down the "initial pj" with this one. Of course for your viewing pleasure here is the "J" in all its polka-dotted glory. Sigh...I love it!
I am in love with the fact that each initial comes in a different color and pattern. Mine just happens to be polka dot which makes me a very happy girl. Oh and each letter is designed different how cute is my lil umbrella?
Dotted Monogram Buttondown $88.00

2. Net up, in shoes I have been dreaming about but likely will not own, (unless hubby decides I deserve these as an anniversary gift?) the Charlotte Olympia horoscope smoking slippers. P.S I'm a Taurus.
You don't have to love these, I totally get it, they are so "different" they borderline on weird. But that is what makes them phenomenal! Even just for funzies I think you should check out the entire line, head over to Charlotte Olympia's e-com site and check them out. Or you can pick them up from our friends at Net-a-Porter
3. Now, maybe you easily forget your name and wish for a subtle reminder while you're at your desk typing, or you really just like cute tiny rings you can check out Jacquie Aiche's Alphabet Letter ring collection.
At $77 the gold-vermeil rings are dainty and hand crafted, perfect for stacking or just wearing alone, perhaps on a pinky, I know you wanna.

"If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"Last week I briefly discussed fashion bloggers who don't seem to think twice before they speak. Cursing and insulting readers and other fashion bloggers online is not the best way to maintain a faithful following of readers, and its the best way to loose credibility online.
Not one to dwell on the negative I tried to counterbalance with some positive quotes about fashion. If you didn't get a chance to read the post then check it out below, along with the others chosen by IFB as part of their weekly round up.
Enjoy, and happy Friday:)

Say Something, But Not Just Anything
You know how the saying goes; "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all" Lately I have come across far too many lets just call them "outspoken" quotes from stylish celebs, fashion industry tycoons and bloggers.
Call me old fashioned but when you have a large on-line presence, and a following of young impressionable tweens and teens its irresponsible to throw your words around, curse and use gods name in vain. This week one of my fav bloggers commented back to her fans on an Instagram photo of hers and did several of the above mentioned. I was turned off from reading her blog the entire week because I felt like not only was she being flippant and unprofessional, but like she wasn't taking her work seriously, or was taking her 'fame' for granted. Ick...
Lets face it, these days you can easily lose your job, your fans and the industries respect if you write, tweet, photograph or record something that is inappropriate And rightfully so, because along the way people get hurt, insulted and alienated.
In the midst of this I was inspired to look for some positive quotes (cause positive it where its at), from some reputable sources. The above quote really made me chuckle, mainly because of who said it, but, I will reveal who that someone is a bit later.
I consider this a fantastic quote because we don't always like to admit that from time to time we let ourselves think of "superficial" stuff, like fashion. Everyone thinks of fashion but sometimes we are afraid to admit that, why? What’s the crime in caring about what you wear, how you wear it, where you got it?
As I was writing this post a reader happened to commented on my blog with the following quote, "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." Dr. Seuss.
That happens to be one of my favourite quotes of all time, and it is so powerful because it can be applied to so many facets of life.
So in keeping with the theme of positive, uplifting words, here are some more that I feel are worthy of being shared, whether you're reading them for the very first time or for the hundredth time I think they all can inspire and promote the sharing of positive words over the internet, and of course they are fashion related :)
“Oh, never mind the fashion. When one has a style of one's own, it is always 20 times better.”
Margaret Oliphant
"I like being a woman, even in a man’s world. After all, men can’t wear dresses, but we can wear the pants."
Whitney Houston
"Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live."
Gianni Versace
"Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it."
Yves Saint-Laurent
"Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world."Marilyn Monroe
"I think there is beauty in everything. What ‘normal’ people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it." Alexander McQueen
And finally, I will fill you in on who said the opening quote, it was Michelle Obama! Just to prove that even the First Lady can be honest and light hearted when discussing fashion, should we all?

Hey there, I have something very serious to share with everyone...
Totally kidding, I don't have anything serious to say at all, in fact I wanted to share this picture of me and bestie doin what we do best; actin a fool. Apparently IFB didn't judge when I revealed my most embarrassing photo's, and they chose my post as part of their weekly round up. Feel free to check it out below and please also take some time to peruse the other awesome blogs in their list.
Be Yourself
With summer fast approaching, we're all taking it easy when it comes to putting on a show. Summer is always more laid back, down to earth and relaxed... a perfect time to reflect on the madness that is everyday life. This week's roundup did a lot of reflecting, from the poses we put on for our blogs, the hamster wheel of personal style on the web, going modest when everyone else is baring it all, letting our hair be it's natural beautiful self, and even embracing your "eye bags." If you're wondering if fashion blogging is shallow or conscious or if Galliano deserves forgiveness this is the roundup for you this week! If you're just looking for some excellent DIYs for the weekend, we've even got a great floral crown, hand stamped jewellery, and shirt dyeing project for you!

Bucket List
The day has come, I will turn 30 today, officially just before lunch (even the day I was born I arrived just on time, I never skip meals, and I am never late).
I think turning 30 is a great time to reflect on the memories you have made over the years bust also a perfect chance for you to set out your goals for the next 30 years. And if you’re OCD like me then you already have that laid out in DETAIL.
I won’t bore you with my life goals because after all this is a fashion blog, and I figure a fashion post would be more up you alley. Therefore I have put together my “fashion bucket list”.
I’d bet most women and even some fashionable men have a list like this in their head, more of a wish list, but superficially fashion related. If you haven’t already guessed it I have fashion on my mind a lot, I am always looking for sales, new brands, new store openings and scoping out designer stuff I can’t always afford but one day hope to make my own.
So, check it out below, the Top 5 of my fashion bucket list.
1. Burberry trench coat: I have coveted a Burberry trench for many, many years. As a teen I had my eyes on the classic beige trench but over the past few years with the evolution of the brand I have fallen in love with the less-classic styles. A friggin Burberry Prorsum Trench is what this girl wants!
THIS one is nice, really nice; the only issue is the price tag. One day Jenn…one day…
2. Chanel Bouclé Jacket: most women want to get their hands on the famous quilted Chanel purse, you know the one every star and socialite carries with the double C’s and the chain link shoulder strap. While it is no doubt a gorgeous purse I have never been a huge fan. My biggest Chanel dream is to own a WHITE bouclé jacket. Coco Chanel created the bouclé jacket back in 1954 and even though I wasn't even born nor was my mother I have wanted one ever since…figure that one out.
4. Shopping at Louis Vuitton on Champs Elysees: this would be what I call an amazing fashion experience. As was shopping at Miu Miu and Gucci at the Spanish Steps in Rome when I did so two years ago. The last time I was in Paris I was a starving student, unable to hardly afford dinner let alone a Louis Vuitton purse, although if I ever got the chance to shop there again I would obviously go straight to the shoes...do you know me at all?
5. Shoe Closet : An entire wall of shoes, in a spare bedroom turned into my closet. I think this one is pretty self-explanatory.
Do you have a fashion bucket list? As always, let me know via the comments below.
On a non fashion related note, its really amazing to wake up to messages, emails, and even a phone call all the way from Dubai, from family and friends who are expressing their love for you on you're birthday. I really hope the next 30 years are just as awesome as the past 30 have been. Thanks everyone :)

Don't Be A Poser
![]() |
say what? you expect me to pose for a picture? |
Since I'm in such a good mood I thought I would share with
you something that most of us (bloggers, women, humans in general) don’t
usually do, I want to share something I am self-conscious about as a blogger, and
in doing so I will reveal some not-so-cute photos of yours truly. Sounds fun, no?
WHY am I doing this? Firstly, I don’t think that growing up
means anything if you haven’t learned from your mistakes in life, educated
yourself on how to be a better person, and moved on, with your head high and
your morals intact. That to me is growing up, in the true sense of the word “growing”
has a lot to do with physical changes, but we can’t forget about the emotional
and mental components to growing.
For me growing up has meant training myself to not hide the “real
Jennifer”, who is the real Jennifer? It has taken me 30 years to perfect this
ridiculously sarcastic vocabulary, obsessive compulsive behaviour and accumulate
enough shoes to open a small boutique. And I am proud of myself and who I am, after-all, it takes a lot of work to look this ridiculous. But, is
this what you see when you read my blog? I really truly hope so. At first I was
really self-conscious about having the people I know, and people I don’t know from
around the world seeing the real me. Well, that lasted about 2.5 seconds, I
soon got over myself and began blogging, and I am happy I did.
Last week I read an article on IFB about vulnerability in the blogging business, and it came at a perfect time,
because two weekends ago I was chatting with a close friend of mine at a bridal
shower about this very topic. This friend also happens to be a fellow fashion
blogger (check out her amazing blog riiiight here ). We got talking about outfit posts on blogs
and how we felt about the most popular ones we see every day, AND how we feel
about partaking in them ourselves for our own blogs.
We both wanted to
dive into that realm and be able to post awesome outfits on our blogs, but we
also were concerned about looking ‘fake’, or coming across as someone/something
we are not. You see, to put it lightly, we both have very “quirky”
personalities, my friend is obsessed with cats (a certified cat lady let’s get
serious, she interrupted my meal to tell me I must follow some fat cat on Instagram,
I love you, but no! ), she’s pint size, with a bubbly personality and a contagious
laugh/giggle, and on top of that she’s a super smart fashion school graduate.
Then there’s me, I think you may already have a flavour for my sarcastic humour and self-deprivation, always looking for an excuse to make a silly comment, or
facial expression, and yes, I am obsessed with dogs; have no formal fashion
education but yet I started a blog and write about fashion several times a week…hmmmm?
How the hell can we pull off the super serious, model poses most fashion
bloggers today flaunt? I’ll tell you, from my own experience, I can’t.
It’s truly difficult for me to stand still and look into a
camera without sticking my tongue out or raising an eye brow. Evidence below…
My only hope is to forgo looking sexy, serious, and
professional and just go with a super smile, a silly facial expression OR crop
my head out of every photo of myself.
“It’s strange because
the #1 piece of advice for success is to be authentic. But how do you be
authentic without being vulnerable?” That quote is from the above article I
mentioned, and isn't this just the lifelong question? This can be applied to so
many different scenarios, applying for a job, flirting with a new guy, trying
to make friends in the playground as a child, and yes, even when you’re trying
to build an audience for your new fashion blog.
I think it all comes down to confidence.
Being confident, every day, no matter what I'm wearing or whether
my hair is done (which if you know me at all you also know my hair is NEVER
done) is not always easy. Women seem to always be struggling with something,
whether it’s feeling unmotivated, unaccomplished, bloated, PMS-ish, moody, overweight,
underweight… I’ll stop there; you get the point. But really, why do we care so much?
Should we care so much? Well obviously the answer is NO!
I'm not a full time or part-time model, I do not moonlight as
a professional photographer, or hair and make-up stylist. But I still write
this blog several times a week and often post photos of myself, and I try to be
completely ME. So far I have gotten only positive feedback, which at first was shocking
because let’s face it I’m a bit weird, but you don't judge, I know you don’t. So
thanks for that.
I strive to offer up the most real version of myself to my
readers, to be real and have other real people embrace that and maybe even
expose a bit of themselves and gain confidence through that dialogue. If down the road I can be an inspiration to other women then
that would make this blog my most successful venture to date. It would be a
great way to spend my 30’s.
I leave you with this collage, these are from Facebook, they
are out there, on the world wide web for everyone to see, am I ashamed? Nope! I
didn't actually post these photos myself but rather I was "tagged" in
them, and no I didn't stalk the people who posted them and demand for them to
un-tag me, I just let it be. Cause whether I liked it or not that the time these photos
were taken they represented me and who I really was in that moment.

Join the Club
How today's female power
house bloggers inspired me to begin writing my very own fashion blog.
I have a confession to
make, throughout my teenage years I developed a habit of going to great lengths
to ensure I was never photographed in the same outfit twice. It started when I
began going to clubs with my friends on the weekends. Along with our fake I.D’s,
we would bring along our cameras and chronicle our “look” for the evening. I
carefully choose outfits for every club outing, and would hit up the mall the
day before for a new shirt or halter top. I wore what I now call “disposable
clothing” because it was so cheap and flimsy it would either fall apart after
one wash or cease to be appealing after one ware. Over the years I thankfully
grew out of this phase of partying till the break of dawn and wearing short
skirts, but never got over my fear of being caught, or god forbid photographed
in the same outfit twice.
Last spring while Facebook
creeping I noticed one of my friends had “Liked” a page belonging to a cute looking
fashion blogger, the page was The Chriselle Factor. I had
never previously read her blog, but the beautiful shots of Chriselle in gorgeous clothing and AMAZING
shoes definitely caught my attention. I spent several hours on her blog
checking out her outfits and reading her posts and I quickly became a fan. Ever
since that day I maintained a steady list of my favourite fashion bloggers and
have diligently read their blogs single every morning.
The source of inspiration
for me was how these young ladies (they are all MUCH younger than me, and very
successful mind you) had a steady stream of amazing outfits that they concocted
by incorporating and recycling key items from their wardrobe several times
over. They were doing what I had avoided for years and looked fabulous and
flawless all the while. Their message to their readers was to invest in better
quality items that can be worn over and over and over, to be true to yourself
and not a slave to fashion trends, and to put yourself out there and always exude
confidence, for me this was impossible to ignore.
Furthermore, if they could
wear the same pair of Current Elliot jeans 5 times in one month and still
engage thousands of readers with every post, then so could I. This wasn't where
I decided to start my own blog, but rather where I decided to be more creative
in the way I dressed myself and the items I purchased. These young women who
own the fashion blogs I read have a daily message to be confident and love yourself,
and I fully approve.
The turning point was when I
discovered The Man Repeller aka Leandra, the quirky, well dressed lover of layers and self deprivation, not to mention insanely talent writer became as I am sure she has for many other girls out there, a role
model and someone who I wished I could be friends with. It’s obvious this chick
is well educated and super confident and for me that was the most inspirational
blog I could have discovered. After
several months of laughing my ass off to her every word I decided to begin my
own blog.
Having survived 7 years of University and post grad studies I luckily
came out with what I believe to be a semi-decent writing style and ability to
put my thoughts down on paper. Writing had always been a favourite past time of mine
and was my favourite element of all my schooling. Having a blog and using it as
an outlet to express my thoughts on fashion seemed like a no brainer.
Sometimes fashion and women
are not taken seriously where intellect is concerned. I maintain that fashion shouldn't be taken too seriously, but women; we should be. These days, a well-dressed
woman doesn't necessarily equal an intelligent woman but sadly, an image of a
woman dressed to the nines, hair and make-up done often brings on stereotypes
of a ditsy, self-centred girl who only cares about whether or not you noticed
her new pair of shoes. While I do love shoes there is much more to me than
that, and there is much more to every woman. Judging someone based on the way
they dress is a critical mistake I believe a lot of people make on a daily
basis. I can now chalk up my obsession with never wearing the same outfit twice
to a simple lack of confidence. As a teenager this is typical, but some adult
women struggle with confidence issues their entire life, and that’s just not
cool.
Some fashion blogs are
really awesome at drawing attention to these issues, while also throwing in
some shopping tips, fun collages and funny stories, and that is precisely what
I want my blog to be. I started my blog three months ago and didn't tell a
single friend or family member because I was afraid of having my writing judged,
but when I finally let the world (the Facebook and Twitter world at least) know that
I had been putting a ton of effort into my little blog it was worth it.
Last week I read an on-line article that focused on “exposing” all of the events in which Kate; the Duchess
of Cambridge re-wore and recycled an item from her wardrobe. Apparently she
wore the same trench coat three times over the past year, which I found to be
humorous because like most of you I am sure, I wear the same coat every single
day from November to March. What does it say when we are obsessed with picking apart Kate’s every outfit, so she wore the same coat twice, you've got to be kidding
me? Royalty, they are just like us! Young women need positive role models who are
going to tell them to ignore this rhetoric and just be themselves. Not everyone
can afford 365 trench coats, and while Kate actually can she also chooses not
to. I believe this is something great she is doing for today’s young girls who
are watching her every move and trying to emulate her in any way possible. My
support for this kind of thinking about fashion is precisely why I own this
blog, and hopefully also why you are reading this :)
And in case you are
wondering why exactly I chose that particular picture for this post, the short
version of the story is that red dress was purchased for a friend’s bridal
shower this past summer, and was then re-worn to another bridal shower last
month, yup, I believe I have overcome my fear, and yes I was photographed at
both events and there is a trail of evidence up on Facebook.

The Circus of Fashion Goes On…
Edited By Taylor Davies
A lot has been made of Suzy Menkes’ “Circus of Fashion” article, published recently in T magazine. We responded to it here on IFB, as did The Man Repeller and as you’ll see below – members of our community. To round out this week’s selection, a carnival of content if you will, from NYFW to uber-trendy shoes. Enjoy!
